Dr. Rubinstein received her MD (2002) from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where she also completed her Internal Medicine residency (2005) and Rheumatology fellowship (2007) before joining VCU as an Assistant Professor. She was promoted to Associate Professor (Term) in 2016.  Dr. Rubinstein is board certified in Rheumatology and Fellow of the American College of Rheumatology (ACR).

Dr. Rubinstein received the VCU School of Medicine (SOM) “Best Teacher” (2011-2017) and Enrique Gerszten Faculty Teaching Excellence (2016) awards and was selected as the SOM nominee for the VCU Distinguished Teaching Award (2022). In 2020, she was appointed to the Grace Branch Moore-Arthritis Foundation Professorship, recognizing contributions to teaching, research, and public service.

Dr. Rubinstein’s scholarship has been in education. Through her work as course director for the SOM Movement course, and as co-developer of a novel Rheumatology curriculum, she has created innovative teaching strategies to improve medical education. She has a published module on the MedEd Portal, which has been downloaded for use internationally. She has co-authored seven abstracts presented at national meetings and was the recipient of an Affordable Course Content Award through the VCU Library (2021) for her work to provide education on health disparities and dermatologic manifestations of rheumatic disease to improve care of a diverse patient population.   

Dr. Rubinstein is a highly productive physician. She received the Department of Internal Medicine Faculty Excellence in Clinical Service Award (2008) and was nominated for the Excellence in Administration Service Award (2018) and Excellence in Clinical Practice Award (2020). She has been listed annually as Richmond Magazine’s “Top Doc” in Rheumatology since 2010, receiving the most votes since 2013. She is an executive board member of the Virginia Society of Rheumatology and has served on the Medical Advisory Council for the Lupus Foundation of America. She has served on the SOM Curriculum Council and as co-Course Director for the SOM Diagnostic Reasoning Course. She is Section Chief for the ACR CARE Committee where she contributes to the annual national ACR CME/MOC examination. In July 2022, she will assume the role of Chief for the Division of Rheumatology, Allergy and Immunology.
