Dr. Cecil completed her undergraduate education at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She received her medical degree from the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York, New York. She subsequently completed both her residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship training in Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Following fellowship training, Dr. Cecil joined the faculty in Infectious Diseases at Johns Hopkins University as Assistant Professor of Medicine until 2004, when she relocated to Richmond, Virginia with family and joined the Infectious Diseases faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University.
At VCU, Dr. Cecil has served as program director for the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program since 2009. She is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at VCU. Her primary interests are HIV clinical care and medical education. She has received teaching awards from the VCU School of Medicine and the Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Cecil served as Associate Chair of the Division of Infectious Diseases at VCU from 2013-2016. In January 2016, she joined the clinical staff at the McGuire VA Medical Center, where she was appointed Chief for the Division of Infectious Diseases in 2018.
Dr. Cecil lives with her husband in Richmond, Virginia. She and her husband are big soccer fans and they enjoy hiking and traveling, particularly to California and Michigan where their two children attend college.
