Welcome from the Program Director

Dr. Pandey

Welcome to the Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program at VCU Medical Center. We are delighted that you are considering joining our program and becoming part of a dedicated team committed to providing compassionate, patient-centered care for individuals facing serious illnesses and end-of-life challenges.

Since the establishment of the Thomas Palliative Care Unit in 2000, our program has grown into a nationally recognized training center for future clinicians. In alignment with the mission of the VCU Massey Comprehensive Cancer Center, our fellowship emphasizes health equity, high-quality patient care, innovative research, and community integration.

Our program offers a comprehensive combination of clinical, educational, and research experiences, with hands-on training in both inpatient and outpatient settings. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other healthcare professionals. Mentored by experienced clinicians who are passionate about advancing the practice of palliative care, you will thrive in a supportive environment that encourages academic curiosity, professional growth, and empowers you to make meaningful contributions to patient care.

Throughout your fellowship, you will care for a diverse range of patients with life-limiting illnesses across adult and pediatric populations. Clinical experiences include rotations at our downtown campus and clinics, the Richmond V.A. Medical Center, and optional regional partner site rotations to broaden your understanding. We encourage scholarly activities and support fellows towards enhancing knowledge base of palliative medicine. Additionally, our Palliative Project ECHO, telemedicine, and other community programs create invaluable opportunities to connect with clinicians across Virginia and beyond.

We are dedicated to inspiring, empowering, and challenging our fellows to become the next generation of leaders in hospice and palliative medicine. Whether your passion lies in clinical practice, teaching, policy, or research, you’ll gain the foundation needed to explore leadership opportunities and expand your expertise.

We invite you to explore our website and reach out to either myself or our fellowship coordinator with any questions. We look forward to discussing how our program can support your professional growth.

Sincerely,

Sudeep Pandey, MD
