Dr. Matherly’ s clinical focus since joining the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University is in treating cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma.  He is an active member of the liver transplant team and a founding member of the multidisciplinary liver cancer clinic.  His specialties include management of end stage liver disease, portal hypertension and hepatocellular cancer.  In addition to his clinical duties, he is a dedicated medical educator. He serves as the program director of the transplant Hepatology fellowship at VCU where he shapes the curriculum and guides fellows through their transplant training.  He has been honored with multiple teaching awards and has been named to Richmond Magazine’s top docs since 2023.  His interests outside of the hospital revolve around being a dad, powerlifting, traveling and soccer.
