As we closed the door on 2020 and welcomed 2021, we once again celebrated our amazing VCU Department of Internal Medicine. One of the most exciting events in recent months was our successful virtual fellowship match, which demonstrated the resilience and creativity of program directors and residents.

Newly appointed Department of Internal Medicine Associate Chair for Quality and Safety Georgia N. McIntosh, M.D., H’03, has earned the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award.

VCU Diabetes Immersion Project: Appreciating the patient perspective

The innovative VCU Diabetes Immersion Project promotes physician understanding of patients’ experiences living with the chronic disease. Find out how the active learning curriculum has become a key feature of the VCU Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism Fellowship Program.

Addressing cancer disparities

VCU welcomed First Lady Jill Biden, Ed.D., to the Massey Cancer Center, where she met with department faculty including Robert Winn, M.D., director of Massey Cancer Center, and Khalid Matin, M.D., interim chair of the Division of Hematology, Oncology and Palliative Care.

Shaping the national conversation

Patrick Nana-Sinkam, M.D., chair of the department’s Division of Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine, joins two national committees focused on inclusivity and career development for the next generation of clinician-scientists.

Premier publication

Gonzalo Bearman, M.D., M.P.H., chair of the department’s Division of Infectious Diseases, was named the inaugural editor of the Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America’s new open-access journal, Antimicrobial stewardship & Healthcare Epidemiology
