Associate Chair for Faculty Development, Stephen J. Bickston MD, AGAF, FACG, FASGE
Dr. Bickston is a Professor of Internal Medicine, the Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and the Associate Chief for the Division of Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition. He graduated from Duke University and earned his medical degree from UNC, Chapel Hill. He completed a residency in internal medicine and a fellowship in gastroenterology at Barnes Hospital, Washington University in St. Louis, where he also earned recognition for excellence in teaching. He then served as a faculty member at the University of Virginia for more than 12 years, where he was selected for a variety of leadership positions and faculty development programs.
Dr. Bickston was recruited to VCU in 2009 for a leadership role in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. He is a clinician-educator with a history of collaborating on industry and NIH-sponsored research. Throughout his career, he has published more than 65 peer-reviewed papers, authored dozens of textbook chapters, has edited and authored a textbook and serves as an associate editor of the journal Inflammatory Bowel Disease. He has decades of experience in mentoring and education and has previously been recognized by the Department of Internal Medicine for excellence in mentorship.
