Dr. Thokozeni Lipato is a general internist who has been caring for individuals with sickle cell disease since 2009.  He is also a primary care physician.  Dr. Lipato has been at VCU Health since 2013.  He has spent the vast majority of his career caring for patients who often face significant barriers to adequate healthcare.  Dr. Lipato has worked for Boston Healthcare for the Homeless Program where he was the lead physician in two unique clinics: one to treat homeless individuals with opioid addiction, and other to offer primary care and endocrine therapy to transgendered men and women.  Before moving to Richmond he worked at an urban community healthcare center in Minneapolis whose patients come from over 12 different racial and ethnic groups that span five continents.

In addition to his clinical role Dr. Lipato spearheading an effort to open an outpatient infusion clinic for the sickle cell disease program and he is active in clinical research, serving as the VCU principal investigator for industry-funded drug trials.
