Dennis Hopkinson, MD is currently a Rising Scholar and Hospitalist in the Department of Internal Medicine. He served as a U.S. Fulbright Scholar to Rwanda during the 2018 - 2019 academic year, during which 80% of his time was devoted to clinical research and the remainder was dedicated to teaching internal medicine residents and medical students. The majority of his work was (and continues to be) in the capital city of Kigali and in the smaller city of Butare. His research foci are sepsis in Rwanda and improving delivery of critical care in East Africa. During his Fulbright scholarship, he also conducted studies on acute coronary syndrome and hypertension while in Rwanda.

Dr. Hopkinson was awarded in 2019 along with Dr. Syed the VCU Presidential Research Quest Fund (PeRQ) to study high-dose intravenous vitamin C as an adjunctive treatment in sepsis in Rwanda. Dr. Hopkinson is also a co-investigator on Dr. Jackson’s Chest Foundation & American Thoracic Society Grant in COVID and Diversity, in which we are assessing the effect of COVID-19 on tuberculosis care in Uganda. Dr. Hopkinson’s research is also funded via internal funding through his position as Rising Scholar.
