Alan W. Dow, MD, MSHA
Alan Dow, MD, MSHA is a tenured professor of medicine and originally founded the hospitalist group at VCU Health System in 2004. After leading it for several years, he then transitioned to leadership roles as an assistant dean and assistant vice president of health sciences. In January of 2021, he returned to lead hospital medicine as the COVID-19 pandemic surged.
Dr. Dow is an award-winning educator and leader who has won the School of Medicine’s Enrique Gerszten, M.D. Faculty Teaching Excellence Award, the School’s highest honor for teaching, and VCU’s Distinguished Teaching Award, the University’s highest award for teaching. Much of his teaching and scholarship has focused on developing, delivering, and evaluating innovative programs to enhance communication and teamwork in healthcare. Currently, he serves as President and CEO of UHS-PEP, his institution’s continuing education enterprise, which produces and credits thousands of hours of programs each year. In all of his roles, he has sought to translate needs defined by practice and the community into high-quality educational and clinical programs that advance health services and improve health.
Alan attended medical school at Washington University and completed residency in internal medicine and a health administration degree at VCU. He and his wife has raised two children in Richmond and enjoy spending time with them in the outdoors and at home with their cats.
