Our Research
The Department of Internal Medicine at the VCU Medical Center is committed to advancing medicine through research. We are proud to have accomplished research faculty who are supported by a strong research infrastructure. You’ll find more information about ongoing research and our robust research support offerings below.
The Associate Chair for Research, Fadi N. Salloum, PhD, works closely with Chair of the Department to oversee activities pertaining to the research goals of the Department. This includes developing and implementing research initiatives and mechanisms to ensure ongoing support for a growing research infrastructure. Dr. Abbate serves as an important resource and liaison to research faculty concerning extramural and intramural funding, research compliance, research career mentoring, and research facilities and equipment. The Department of Internal Medicine also targets funding growth directly with a dedicated team, the Research Services Office, led by Rashmi Pershad, MPhil, CCRP the Associate Administrator for Research.
The research interests of faculty within the Department of Internal Medicine span the spectrum from basic laboratory research investigating diseases at a molecular and genetic level, to dedicated clinical outcomes research and finally to translation of knowledge from bench to bedside. VCU Medical Center also offers excellent facilities and resources for both basic and Clinical research. State-of-the-art Core Facilities, such as the Center for Molecular Imagery, provide ideal environments for carrying out research, while the Center for Clinical and Translational Research provides a wide range of services to facilitate for key stages of the research process.
Our researchers hold funding from federal resources such as the National Institutes of Health, grants from several foundations such as the American Heart Association as well as grants from severalindustries. There is active intra-departmental as well as inter-departmental collaboration directed primarily by the mutual interest in a given disease process. You can see the list of diseases and focuses researchers are pursuing here. Furthermore, the Department of Internal Medicine is dedicated to training and supporting the new and upcoming faculty members in their research endeavors. Because the grant process is a complicated one, we have also provided a wealth of information on funding sources, application processes and intramural requirements in our Research Policies & Resources section.
