The Core Educator group for the Internal Medicine residency training program at VCUHS is made up of a diverse group of generalists, hospitalists and subspecialty faculty in the Department of Internal Medicine. These faculty are passionate about education of residents in all arenas and actively train residents in clinical practice arenas at both sites, VCUHS and McGuire VAMC.

These core faculty are supported by the department of internal medicine to serve in this key role in the program. They serve as members of the clinical competency committee to regularly monitor resident progress and foster ongoing development for each individual resident. They undergo monthly faculty development training in core topics like direct observation, evaluation and assessment, and coaching. Core Educators directly advise a group of six residents, two from each class, throughout their residency training. They meet with advisees regularly to serve as resources and mentor them in their professional and personal goals. They coach residents in their study plans for knowledge acquisition. They routinely serve as expert morning report and core conference facilitators. Core Educators are responsible for meeting with advisees semi-annually to formally review resident progress on the internal medicine milestones and set goals for ongoing growth. They are engaged in all program activities, including but not limited to intern orientation, recruitment, and resident retreats.

The Core educators are shining stars who are actively engaged in all aspects of the program. The success of the training program would not be possible without these dedicated faculty!
