1. Multidisciplinary Conference: Typically, fellows present three cases with relevant clinical findings, radiology images, biopsies, and endoscopic findings followed by a 10-15 min review of the relevant literature addressing a key management issue. Cases are discussed by a variety of specialists (surgeons, radiologists and gastroenterologists) who offer their opinions regarding the patient’s diagnostic work-up, therapy, and disposition. These exercises assist the trainees in acquiring knowledge on a wide range of patients with different clinical problems. 

    VCUHS: This conference is held in the Radiology conference room every Tuesday at 4:30pm. 

    VAMC: This conference is held in the 2nd floor conference room every Wednesday at 8:15am. 

  2. Internal Medicine Grand Rounds: 12 p.m. every Thursday, Kontos Medical Sciences Building Auditorium

  3. GI Grand Rounds: This is the major formal educational conference every week. It is held weekly for 10 months of the year on Thursdays from 5:00pm – 6:00pm in Molecular Medicine Research Building and West Hospital. Faculty members from within the division, selected faculty members from other department along with GI fellows under the mentorship of a specific faculty member give grand rounds. Selected faculty members who are active researchers also present grand rounds. Journal club, Morbidity and Mortality conference and board review sessions are also included in grand round.

  4. Summer Lecture Series: These are a series of didactics given by faculty member and focuses on the clinical approach to common problems encountered at the bedside. These are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00pm in place of the Core Curriculum lectures and Grand Rounds during July and August.

  5. GI Journal Club: This is held once a month on Thursdays at 5:00pm. Major journals related to gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition are reviewed. The fellows with faculty mentorship make presentations followed by discussion on relevant topics.

  6. Liver Weekly Report: This is a service-cum-teaching session where clinical details related to the hepatology service at VCUHS are discussed. It is held on Mondays at 8:15am.

  7. Liver journal club/ Biopsy Conference: This is held at VCUHS on Monday at 4pm. The fellows rotating through Hepatology with hepatology faculty review liver biopsies from the previous week.

  8. Liver Transplant Conference: Mandatory for transplant Hepatology fellow, highly encouraged for Hepatology consult fellow.

  9. Edward Moore Lecture: This named lecture is given annually by visiting professors renowned for their expertise in a specific area of gastrointestinal or liver research.

  10. Graduate Medical Education Research Series: The graduate medical education research series is a weekly series running July through September for fellows that will provide the core knowledge essential to understanding and engaging in research and scholarly activities. The series also introduces the learner to the staff and institutional infrastructure available to assist investigators.
