Associate Chair for Education, Stephanie Call, MD, MSPH
Stephanie Call, MD, MSPH is the Associate Chair for Education at the VCU Department of Internal Medicine. Dr. Call was recruited to join the Department of Internal Medicine Faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital in the fall of 2004. She was ready to lead, partner with, and to challenge the VCUHS housestaff and faculty members in bringing the Internal Medicine training programs to national prominence. She is one of the reasons VCUHS is one of the most sought-after Internal Medicine training programs in the country today.
Dr. Call has received numerous teaching awards from each of the medical universities with which she was affiliated. Since arriving at VCUHS, she has been recognized with numerous departmental honors and accolades, including the Leadership in Graduate Medical Education Award and the Irby-James Award for Excellence in Clinical Training from the School of Medicine. In 2010, she was recognized by Richmond Magazine as a special honoree in teaching and mentoring.
Most notably, she was a recipient of the 2012 Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award - one of the highest honors bestowed by the ACGME, with just 10 program directors from across the country recognized for their innovations in teaching residents. Dr. Call was also recognized as Working Mother of the Year in 2012 for demonstrating that you don’t have to choose between a fulfilling career and a wonderful personal life (And her three daughters, Alex, Katie and Emma, agree!).
Serving on committees with AAIM, APDIM, ACP, Dr. Call was a founding member of the National Program Directors Survey Committee and just completed a four-year term on the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine Council. She was selected as one of 12 members of the writing tasks force for the development of the National Core Entrustable Professional Activities for Entering Residency Project that was published by the AAMC in spring of 2014 and has been adopted nationwide.
While Dr. Call is nationally recognized for her leadership in medical education, one really gets a sense of who she is from those around her- her colleagues, housestaff members, and medical students whom she teaches.
