    Professional Profile

    Dr. Smallfield joined Pauley Heart Center in September 2012 as an assistant professor of Internal Medicine. In addition to her work at the MCV campus, she also plans to attend to patients at VCU's outreach clinics in Stony Point and Williamsburg.

    Dr. Smallfield's clinical specialties include advanced heart failure, heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support (LVADs) and pulmonary hypertension. She performs procedures including right heart catheterizations and heart biopsies.

    A native of Newport News, Dr. Smallfield received her B.A. in East Asian Studies from the College of William and Mary and then attended Eastern Virginia Medical School, where she received an M.S. in Biomedical Sciences and her M.D. At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, she completed her residency in Internal Medicine as well as her fellowships in Cardiology and Advanced Heart Failure, Transplant and Pulmonary Vascular Disease. She is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Internal Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology and Advanced Heart Failure/Transplant Cardiology.

    Professional Profile

    Dr. Ellenbogen is Pauley Heart Center's Chairman of the Division of Cardiology, and Director of Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing on MCV Campus and at McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center. He has held the Hermes A. Kontos, MD Professorship in Cardiology since 2001.

    A native of New York, Dr. Ellenbogen's formal education began at Princeton University, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in Biology. He earned his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University, where he also did his internship and residency training in Internal Medicine. He is a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Societies. He received his Cardiology fellowship training at Duke University Medical Center. A member of the MCV Campus faculty since 1986, Dr. Ellenbogen achieved the rank of full Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) in 1997, and was Vice-Chairman of the Division of Cardiology from 2003 – 2009. He also serves as Director of Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology and Pacing at both VCU's MCV Campus and the McGuire Veterans Administration Medical Center. Dr. Ellenbogen is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the Council on Clinical Cardiology and the Council on Circulation of the American Heart Association. He has served as Chairman of the American Heart Association's Committee on Electrocardiography and Arrhythmias, Education Committee of the Heart Rhythm Society, President of the Richmond American Heart Association, Board of Trustees for the Heart Rhythm Society and Director of the Cardiology Advisory Board for the V.A. medical system, He has served as a delegate to the American College of Cardiology, and steering committee member for two important NIH trials, AFFIRM and MOST. In recognition of his outstanding achievements in clinical cardiology, Dr. Ellenbogen was named the MCV Campus Clinician of the Year for 2001. Dr. Ellenbogen's academic, clinical and research efforts include an interest in newer, more effective ways to perform ablation and to develop methods for ablation of atrial fibrillation. He is involved in the development of new types of pacemakers and exploring the role of pacemakers in treating congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Dr. Ellenbogen has a highly successful record of attracting both public and private funding and has served as principal investigator on over 100 funded grants and contracts. Additionally, Dr. Ellenbogen has served as the Director of Data and Safety Monitoring Boards for a number of national and international clinical trials. He has published more than 250 original scientific reports and over 140 book chapters, editorials and review articles. Dr. Ellenbogen is the editor or co-editor of five textbooks of cardiac electrophysiology. He has presented over 290 abstracts at major scientific meetings. Dr. Ellenbogen serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, American Journal of Cardiology, American Heart Journal, Circulation, the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology, Heart Rhythm and is a Senior Editor of Heart Rhythm, PACE and Circulation: Arrhythmias and Electrophysiology. Dr. Ellenbogen is the Co-Editor for the American College of Cardiology for the Cardiosource web site on atrial fibrillation. Dr. Ellenbogen has been an invited lecturer and speaker all over the world and has given over 300 talks at major national meetings, including lectures at Harvard Medical School, University of California at Los Angeles, Yale University School of Medicine, University of Michigan, and George Washington University. Dr. Ellenbogen is a member of the writing committee for the AHA/ACC/HRS Guidelines Committee for Atrial fibrillation and for implanted cardiac rhythm devices.
